About this card
Zorya (Zarja) is the goddess (or pair of goddesses) of the dawn and the morning star (Venus) [S4][S5]. The 'Zorya' is the 'gate' of the sky, the threshold between the human world and the divine [S5]. In folk belief, the 'Zorya' is the 'guardian of the threshold' — she opens and closes the 'gate of the sky' (the dawn) [S5]. There are two 'Zorya': the 'Zorya Voshodnyaya' (the Rising Star, the dawn) and the 'Zorya Zakatnaya' (the Setting Star, the dusk) [S5]. The 'Zorya' is a well-attested folk figure (the dawn, the morning star), though her status as a formal pre-Christian goddess is debated [S6].
