About this card

'Nebo' (the sky) was personified in Slavic folk belief as the supreme heavenly father — the 'sky-father' above all the named gods [S4][S5][S6]. In the folk (post-Christian) world, Nebo is the highest, a kind of supreme creator who sends the rain and the thunder [S5]. Scholars differ on whether Nebo was a formal pre-Christian deity or a folk concept that absorbed the role of the supreme sky-god (Perun) after Christianization [S6]. The name 'Nebo' itself is common across Slavic languages [S4]. We treat Nebo as the reconstructed supreme sky-father, noting that its pre-Christian status is debated [S6].
