About this card

Jarilo (Yarilo) is the god of spring, youth, and the sun [S4][S5]. In folk tradition, the 'Kupala' night (the midsummer solstice, around June 23/24) is a fire-and-water festival: bonfires are lit, people leap over the fire, and the 'Kupala' flower (the fern-flower) is sought [S5]. The 'Kupala' ritual is well-attested in folk tradition across Slavic lands [S5]. Jarilo's relationship to the 'Kupala' festival is debated: some see Jarilo as the 'Kupala' god (the spring/youth/sun god), others see the 'Kupala' as a separate (possibly older) water/sun ritual [S6]. Jarilo is the great antagonist of Morana (the winter/death goddess) in the reconstructed seasonal cycle [S6].
