About this card

Yamata-no-Orochi ('Eight-Branched Great Serpent') is the great serpent monster of the Izumo region, with eight heads and eight tails [S1]. It devours the daughters of a local family one by one (seven of the eight), and the last, Kushinada-hime, is next [S1]. Susanoo slays the beast—traditionally by luring it with sweetened sake in eight vats and cutting it down—and in its tail he finds the sword Kusanagi (Ame-murakumo-no-tsurugi) [S1]. It is the archetypal Japanese serpent monster, a force of destructive chaos overcome by the hero-god [S1][S2].
