About this card

Toyotama-hime ('Abundant Jewel Princess'), also called Hohodemi, is a daughter of Amaterasu sent down as the 'heavenly bride' of the descending prince Ninigi [S1]. In the Kojiki she gives birth to their son Hooroni (Ōyahata) in a small hut (hori-hutsu) at sea; when Ninigi, impatient, opens the hut, smoke and blood issue and the sea is born—thereafter Toyotama-hime is identified with the sea as the goddess Watatsumi [S1]. She thus embodies the heavenly line's union with the earthly/sea realm and the mythic origin of the sea. The genealogy from her to the emperors (through Hooroni) is a key part of the imperial founding myth [S1][S2].
