About this card

Ninigi-no-Mikoto is the heavenly prince, grandson of Amaterasu, sent down from Takamagahara to take rule of the middle land (Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni) [S1]. His descent (Tenson Kōryō) alights at Takachiho in Hyuga (Kyūshū) [S1]. On the way, guided by the crossroads god Sarutahiko, he is confronted by the island god Ōkuninushi and his retinue, who resist the heavenly takeover; after the contest (the throwing of the sword) and the subjugation (Kuniyurinshi), Ōkuninushi hands over the land and the sacred regalia [S1]. Ninigi takes the earthly bride Konohanasakuya-hime and later the heavenly bride Toyotama-hime (Amaterasu's daughter); their son Hooroni (Ōyahata) is the ancestor of the emperors [S1][S2]. He is thus the hinge figure between the heavenly and earthly realms and the founding link in the imperial genealogy.
