About this card
Inari Ōkami is the deity of rice, prosperity, and the fox (kitsune), centered on the great Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyōto [S1]. Unlike the high deities of the Kojiki, Inari is a later (Heian-period and later) development of Shinto, illustrating that the Japanese tradition continued to grow long after the 8th-century mythographic compilations [S1][S21]. The deity is often represented as a female figure and is attended by foxes, which serve as messengers. Inari's rise reflects the agricultural and mercantile concerns of later Japanese religion, and it shows that 'Japanese mythology' is not a closed 8th-century corpus but a living, accreting tradition [S1][S21].
