Zeus is the supreme god of the classical Greek pantheon, king of Olympus and lord of the sky, thunder, weather, and the moral and political order [S1][S2][S3]. Son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, he survived his father's attempt to devour him, grew up hidden in Crete, and led the overthrow of the Titans in the Titanomachy, for which he was awarded the sky and the thunderbolt (won from the Cyclopes, who forged it) [S1]. The cosmos was divided by lot: Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the sea, Hades the underworld [S1]. Zeus is the patron of hospitality (xenia), oaths, and kingship, and enforces cosmic order; his many offspring include Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hermes, Dionysus, and the hero Perseus, among others [S2][S4][S5]. Cultically he was worshipped at Dodona, Olympia, and countless other sites; Zeus was 'the one who gives the season' and the upholder of the world's balance [S6].
