Cronus is the youngest and last of the Titans, and the one Gaia chose to overthrow Ouranos with the flint sickle [S1]. He castrated his father and, with Rhea, reigned over the next age of the world [S1]. Warned by a prophecy (delivered by his parents) that he too would be overthrown by a child, Cronus swallowed each of his newborn children — Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon — as they were born [S1][S5]. Rhea hid the infant Zeus in a Cretan cave, and Zeus, grown, forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings, then led them (with the help of the Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires) to war against the Titans: the Titanomachy [S1]. Defeated, Cronus and the other Titans were cast into Tartarus, with the Hecatoncheires set as guards [S1].
