Artemis (Diana) is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, and the wilderness, and the protector of young girls and of childbirth (she is a midwife-goddess in some cults) [S4][S5][S6]. Twin of Apollo, daughter of Zeus and Leto, she asked Zeus for eternal virginity and for the gifts of the hunt [S4][S5]. In later (Hellenistic/Roman) association she was linked to the moon (a development parallel to Apollo's link to the sun) [S4][S5]. She is a powerful, sometimes vengeful goddess: Actaeon was turned into a stag and torn by his own hounds for seeing her bathing; Orion was punished for his arrogance; Arachne was transformed for her hubristic weaving [S4][S5]. Her great sanctuary was at Ephesus (the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders) and at Brauron in Attica [S6].
