Nephthys is the goddess of the dead, the protection of the mummy, and the threshold (her name means 'lady of the house') [S4]. She is the sister of Osiris and Isis and the wife (in some accounts) of Set [S4]. In the Osiris cycle, Nephthys stands with Isis in grief and in the restoration of Osiris: the two sisters (Isis as the kite, Nephthys as the swallow) circle the body of Osiris, mourning and protecting it [S3][S4]. Nephthys is one of the four protectors of the canopic jars (the internal organs) in the Book of the Dead [S2][S4]. She is a goddess of the threshold — the boundary between the living and the dead — and of the protection of the mummy in the tomb [S4].
