About this card

Anubis is the jackal-headed god of mummification and the dead [S4]. He is the overseer of the embalming: in the 'Weighing of the Heart' scene, Anubis (or a priest in his guise) performs the weighing [S2][S4]. He is the god of the threshold of the tomb — the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead [S4]. Anubis is the 'foremost of the westerners' (the west is the land of the dead, where the sun sets) [S4]. In the Osiris cycle, Anubis is the one who mummifies Osiris's body, making him the first mummy [S3][S4]. He is a god of protection of the grave and of the safe passage of the soul to the afterlife [S4].
